A swim, a ride and a marathon, all before midnight. The first man with Down syndrome to finish one kept a rule that fits on a wristband.
hris Nikic did not walk until he was four. He had open-heart surgery as an infant, years of therapy after that, and a body that learned everything late. When he was eighteen his father wrote a plan on a whiteboard in the kitchen. It had one instruction. Get one percent better every day.
He fell off the bike, knelt on an ant hill, and got back on.
The goal at the bottom of the whiteboard was an Ironman. Two and four-tenths miles of open water, a hundred and twelve miles on a bicycle, and then a full marathon, all inside seventeen hours. Nobody with Down syndrome had ever finished one. Chris started with a single push-up. Then two. Then a walk to the mailbox and back. His training partner, a man named Dan Grieb, tied himself to Chris with a bungee cord so the two of them could run as one.
On the seventh of November, 2020, at Ironman Florida, he walked into the Gulf of Mexico at dawn. Somewhere on the bike course he crashed and tore up a knee. At an aid station he knelt on an ant hill and was stung across both legs. He got back on the bicycle. He started the marathon in the dark with his legs on fire, and at sixteen hours, forty-six minutes and nine seconds he crossed the line, fourteen minutes inside the cutoff. Two years later he finished the world championship at Kona.
One percent is nothing. You cannot see it in a day or a week, and that is exactly why it works. A goal that size cannot be attacked head-on by anybody. It can only be approached by someone willing to do a small, dull thing today and again tomorrow, and to trust the arithmetic.
Most founders we meet want the photograph at the finish line. The ones who get it are the ones who come to love the walk to the mailbox.
Pick the one percent. Do it today. Then do it again.
