Fred Smith wrote the business plan for FedEx as a term paper at Yale University in 1965. His professor gave it a C. The paper described a system for guaranteed overnight delivery of time-sensitive shipments — a hub-and-spoke model centered in Memphis that would route every package through a single facility and redistribute it for next-day delivery. His professor did not believe the economics could work. His professor was not entirely wrong.


Smith launched Federal Express in 1971 with $4 million of his own inheritance and $80 million in venture capital — at the time, one of the largest venture rounds in American history. The company began operations in April 1973, delivering 186 packages on its first night.
